White Labs Expands to Europe
SAN DIEGO, CA (Feb. 17, 2015) – Following last month’s announcement that White Labs is expanding to Asheville, NC, the San Diego-based company has announced it is placing an outpost in Copenhagen, Denmark.
White Labs will occupy space at the WarPigs brewpub (a joint venture of Danish Mikkeller and American 3 Floyds Brewing Co.). The relationship will bring three widely recognized companies in the brewing world into close proximity and will create a strong beer focus to the historic meat packing district in Copenhagen, where the building is located. Known for its creative gastronomy, growing craft beer and music scene, and robust art district, this Copenhagen district is exploding into a haven for brewing and culinary arts.
“I am greatly looking forward to collaborating with White Labs,” said Kyle Wolak, head brewer at WarPigs. “It is an extraordinary opportunity to expand my knowledge of yeast and its vital role in the brewing process.”
White Labs is pleased to bring its yeast production and fermentation knowledge closer to its European customers. White Labs has provided yeast and related products to Europe since its founding in 1995, and having local personnel and small-scale production capacity will enhance this important relationship. The office will allow increased distribution to Europe and will enhance relationships with existing distributors, allowing for expanded offerings of fresh yeast for customers throughout Europe.
“Craft beer and brewing innovation is thriving in Europe, and the future is even brighter,” said White Labs CEO Chris White. “We are pleased to bring our knowledge and experience developed over many years of serving breweries, wineries and distillers around the world into closer proximity to our important customers in Europe.”
The Copenhagen lab will be led by Troels Prahl, who also serves as the Head of Research and Development at White Labs Inc. Prahl has worked closely with White Labs on yeast research and development project management since 2007. In recent years, he has presented at major technical conferences and taught technical classes with renowned brewing science schools, such as Siebel Institute, Chicago and the Scandinavian School of Brewing in Copenhagen. Prahl was also recognized as an award-winning head brewer during his time at a prominent London brewery from 2010-2011.
White Labs Copenhagen will officially be opening at the same time as the WarPigs brewpub; this is expected to happen in April/May this year. White Labs is anticipating shipping out the first yeast from Copenhagen in the summer of 2015.
Besides its headquarters in San Diego, CA, White Labs has satellite facilities in Davis, CA, and Boulder, CO, and announced last month that it would expand into renovated facilities in North Carolina to serve its East Coast customers.
In 2014, White Labs introduced its patented FlexCell technology for creating yeast that has never been exposed to the environment. Yeast will be made in Copenhagen using this technology and released in PurePitch® packages.
