Yeast Lab Technician I

Asheville, NC 

The Yeast Laboratory Technician is responsible for the high-standard quality control measures involved with yeast propagation, including sterile yeast handling, cell counting, media preparation and experimental protocol.

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Starts and transfers lab-scale yeast propagation cultures.
  • Prepares media.
  • Performs aseptic sampling of yeast & wild yeast/bacteria propagations and various stages throughout the production cycle.
  • Conducts quality control testing on all yeast and bacteria produced, ensuring that it is free from contamination.
  • Performs cell counts on yeast cultures.
  • Performs intermediate data entry into NetSuite.
  • Assists with and helps to resolve customer complaints related to yeast and wild yeast/bacteria QC.
  • Maintains overall Yeast Lab cleanliness.
  • Performs plate reading and clears yeast & bacteria for packaging.
  • Assists in preparation of lab supplies and consumables.
  • Assists in the training of Lab Assistants and/or interns.
  • Performs additional tasks or projects as assigned.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or other science related field required.
  • 1 year of laboratory bench work experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal daily oversight.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Experience with inventory tracking software a plus.

Physical Demands

Medium work:  Employee may, or may not, have a workstation or office.  Time spent conducting sedentary work is less than 50%.  Requires walking, standing and/or driving for more than 50% of the workday.  Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  Must have adequate vision to use a microscope and adequate hand dexterity for using pipettes and cell culture tools.

Analytical Lab Technician

San Diego, CA 

The Analytical Laboratory Technician performs in-house and client sample analysis on a variety of products including beer, wine, spirits, and kombucha.

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Receives and process samples for analysis.
  • Prepares and performs analysis on beer, wine, kombucha, and spirit samples using laboratory analytical equipment including Beer Alcolyzer, Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatograph, and HPLC.
  • Utilizes a variety of microbiological techniques in the analysis of samples, including Plating, Gram Stain, Microscopy, and PCR Techniques.
  • Utilizes QBench to maintain and log accurate analytical results.
  • Prepares media/stock solutions used in lab.
  • Prepares customer lab supply orders. 
  • Assists with customer support.
  • Maintains overall lab cleanliness.
  • Collaborates with Analytical Lab Manager to assess needs for additional testing services and methods for product analysis.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science, Brewing Science, or related field required.
  • 1+ years of Laboratory Technician experience required – preferably in chemical or microbiological analysis.
  • Knowledge of brewing and the brewing process required.
  • Working knowledge of the following lab equipment required: Microscope, Centrifuge, Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatograph, and HPLC.

Physical Demands

Light work:  While the employee may have a workspace, the time spent conducting sedentary work is approximately 50% with the other 50% of time spent walking, standing and/or driving.  Employee may be required to lift 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  Position requires use of hands and ability to speak, hear and see clearly.  Position works in a laboratory environment with few instances of exposure to fumes or chemicals.

Server

The Tap Room Server is responsible for providing exceptional service and overall experience for every guest.

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Greets and engages with customers in a friendly manner and provides insightful information about White Labs as well as our food and beverage options.
  • Take food and beverage orders from guests and offers suggestions on both. 
  • Enters orders in our point-of-sale system in accordance with company policy.
  • Delivers food and beverages from kitchen and bar to guests in a timely matter.
  • Follows all rules and regulations in regard to service of alcohol.
  • Performs side work at the start and end of each shift as required.
  • Maintains clean service areas.
  • Monitors and observes guests dining experience. Ensure guests are satisfied with the food, service and experience. Responds promptly and courteously to any requests and notifies management as needed.
  • Prepare final bill, present check to guest, accept payment, process credit card charges or make change (if applicable).
  • Be ready and willing to assist fellow servers as situations arise.
  • Assists with clearing and resetting tables.
  • Attends all scheduled employee meetings and brings suggestions for improvement.
    Performs other related duties as assigned by the General Manager or manager-on-duty.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Previous serving experience required.
  • Knowledge of, and passion for fermented food/beverages.
  • Cicerone certification a plus.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Possess basic math skills and have the ability to handle money and operate a point-of- sale system.

Physical Demands

Employee typically shares workstation with others in similar positions. Time spent conducting sedentary work is less than 25%. Requires walking, standing, kneeling and/or reaching for more than 75% of the workday. Lifting 30 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
